TerasBatam.id: To secure the maritime area in the Riau Islands Province, especially in the North Natuna Sea, which is full of illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, the National Police Headquarters Security Maintenance Agency (Baharkam) places 9 Patrol Vessel of various types under operational control (BKO) Riau Islands Regional Police.

Head of Baharkam Police Headquarters Commissioner General (Komjen) Pol Arief Sulistiyanto in a press conference aboard the Police Ship (KP) Bisma 8001, Tuesday (31/08/2021) said that for a long time the National Police Headquarters had placed 9 patrol vessel in Riau Islands tasked with securing sea area at the border from various transnational crimes.

“All ships in the BKO (Under Operational Control) in the Riau Islands Regional Police (Polda), their operations depend on the Kapolda (Chief of Riau Island Police), he is in control,” said Arief, who had served as the Tanjungpinang Police Chief a dozen years ago.

According to Arif, in addition to placing 9 patrol vessel of various types and sizes, the National Police Headquarters also appointed a 1-star high-ranking officer as a supervisor to control the movement of the patrol boats.

“His job is to protect all marine areas. The patrol boat fills the tasks of PSDKP, Customs and the Navy, we are collaborating,” said Arief.

However, Arief did not elaborate in more detail whether the placement of the patrol vessel was related to the increasingly dynamic North Natuna Sea or South China Sea escalation with maneuvers from the China.

“His job is to protect all marine areas,” said Arief.

Meanwhile, the Director of the Water Police Brigadier General Pol Yasin Kosasih said, there are two type A ships that routinely go to the North Natuna Sea, namely KP Bisma and KP Yudistira because in profile the two ships are capable of sailing to Natuna, while 7 other ships move in the Riau Islands region.

“At certain times they spread out in the Riau Islands sea area which is considered vulnerable to security disturbances, and at certain times they all gather at the Batu Ampar port,” said Yasin, who has long served as Director of the Water Police of the Riau Islands Police.

On August 27, 2021, the Police Headquarters Patrol Vessel managed to capture 4 fishing boats from Vietnam in the North Natuna Sea. The ship carried out IUU in Indonesian territorial waters with evidence of more than 2 tons fish caught in the Natuna waters.
